Macros for Transliteration of Russian and Ukrainian

This page explains how to install and use the Microsoft Word template with macros for scholarly transliteration of Russian and Ukrainian text.

Download template: https://fisun.org/files/RU_UA_Translit.dotm

The template contains two macros, RU_Translate and UA_Translate. They allow you to select Cyrillic text in a Word document and transliterate it into Latin script according to the scholarly system commonly used in German-language Slavic studies.

Installation on Windows

  1. Download RU_UA_Translit.dotm.
  2. Open Word and go to:
  3. Select Startup / Autostart / Автозагрузка and note the folder path.
  4. Close Word.
  5. Copy RU_UA_Translit.dotm into that folder.
  6. Start Word again.

Typical Windows path: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

Installation on macOS

  1. Download RU_UA_Translit.dotm.
  2. Quit Microsoft Word.
  3. In Finder, open the Word Startup folder. A common path is:

~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Startup/Word

  1. If needed, you can also check the location in Word:
  2. Copy RU_UA_Translit.dotm into the Startup folder.
  3. Start Word again.

If the Library folder is hidden in Finder, open Finder, choose Go, and hold the Option key to reveal Library.

How to run the macros

  1. Open any Word document.
  2. Select the Cyrillic text you want to transliterate.
  3. Open the macro dialog:
  4. Select RU_Translate for Russian or UA_Translate for Ukrainian.
  5. Click Run / Ausführen / Выполнить.

Recommended: add buttons to the Quick Access Toolbar

For regular use, I recommend adding both macros to the Quick Access Toolbar.

  4. Optionally rename the buttons or choose icons.
  5. Click OK.

macOS

  1. Open the toolbar settings.
  2. Find the list of available commands or macros.
  3. Add RU_Translate and UA_Translate to the Quick Access Toolbar.
  4. Save the changes.

Keyboard shortcuts

If you prefer, you can also assign keyboard shortcuts to the macros.

Windows

  1. Open the keyboard customization dialog.
  2. Select the category Macros / Makros / Макросы.
  3. Select RU_Translate or UA_Translate.
  4. Enter a shortcut and assign it.

macOS

Depending on the Word version, toolbar buttons are usually the simpler and more reliable option on Mac.
